Pond construction

John & Yvonne's pond - page 4

John & Yvonne have continued with improvements to their pond. July 1988.
The box filters at the bottom of each pond have been replaced with very large bio filters (one for each pond). John has built them himself. They are made of large rubbermade tubs with a water inlet from the pump, drain, and clean water output to the ponds. They are filled with lava rocks as bio media and they are elevated off of the bottom of each with some bricks and wire mesh to keep them from going into the drain.

This photograph shows the pond as it is at present with the flowers in full bloom.

A bridge has also been built across the two ponds, and details of this can be seen on page 5.

WARNING. When you are using containers for filters etc, and especially any metal make sure that they are suitable for use in a fish enviroment and will not contaminate the water. If in any doubt then do not use it.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
