Bakki Showers

The bank of Bakki showers shown here are in the new fish house at Momotaro Koi, and it was built in 2003. It was being commissioned in the fall of 2003 with Koi from the autumn harvests. Note the large diameter green hoses which provide huge amounts of air to each pond. Each pond has a chamber built across one corner of it. This is where the bottom drains feed into, and where a large submersible pump takes the water up to the Bakki showers. The plumbing I recall was about 4” in diameter. The water is returned via a concrete shelf under the Bakki showers.

This is another view of the new fish house at Momotaro Koi taken from the entrance. There is sufficient space here for a small truck to deliver Koi close to the ponds.   This is a close up of one of the Bakki showers operating on the 1500 ton (330,000 imp gallons) heated indoor pond, which is famous throughout the World (picture below).

This pond (above) is the largest filtered concrete pond in Japan . It is home to about 100 Koi which range in size from 70cm, up to over 1 metre long. Some of these Koi belong to customers. The submerged media filtration runs beneath decking, around the perimeter of the pond, and uses Momotaro's filter media "Bacteria House". Japanese blue matting was used until recently.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
