My neighbour had a koi pond that was breaking up in the frost and the walls were leaking badly it was only a matter of a short time and the pond was going to fail. His depth was only a few feet deep no bottom drain and he had some nice fish in there.
My pond was not really ready and I knew fish should not be moved at such low temperatures but we had no choice it was either move the fish or find them frozen on his garden when the walls collapsed in the morning. So on the 10th of December they moved in to there new home.

New pond syndrome started almost immediately the filters were just not working and there were too many fish for the filters to cope with.

Christmas Eve 2005 in 3 months I had got it to this stage alone and I was not happy at all.

Slabs laid down, timber surround cut and fitted with blue decking lights the water was at 8 degrees and new pond syndrome was not getting any better.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
