Steve's pond

The bottom drain in the concrete base

Bottom drain set in concrete that turned out to be a very strong mix and would not crack or fail.

The footings for the filter section The footings were dug out for the filter section of the pond I also wanted to lay a dwarf wall for flowers to make the whole area roll around the garden making the whole pond concept a landscaped area that drew your eyes to the centre of the pond when entering the garden.

The concrete base is completed
Another view of the concrete base

The concrete was laid down giving me the base of the pond this was over 6 inches thick and a very strong mix. The concrete blocks by now had been laid on the out side and the cavity was tied together with steel wall ties then back filled with solid concrete making a very strong base to build on.

A view of the completed back wall The back wall was built up with the concrete blocks and the whole of the two outside walls was back filled with 9 inches of solid concrete to ensure that if the hard clay decided to move it would not be because of the water pressing against it.

Starting the outside wall The bricks I decided to use were engineering bricks very hard and very strong they reminded me of china plates as if dropped they would sometime break. This was recommended by the local builders merchant as I had no experience at all of what type of bricks to use.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
