Pond Description

Steve's pond

Starting to dig out the pond The basic foundations still a load of dirt to remove yet.

The sump for the pond
Using a spirit level on stand
7kn foundation concrete blocks was used for the inside of the pond this was more than strong enough to support the base of the pond when full with water. My digger friend gave me a hand with the cement laying and block laying. (This cost me a new pc and a flat screen a small price to pay for the use of the digger and driver as well). On the right using a £25 birthday present as recommended by Koi Cymru, and yes it worked very well and the final pond project turned out completely level when filled.

The waterfall in position

Lining up the water fountain ready to be fitted later I decided to make the waterfall removable just in case I needed to service it.

The foundation in place for outer walls

I laid 6 inches of foundation concrete in to the ground for the next phase of the dig.

Some of the blocks in position
Base of the pond has been dug out

Once the foundations had set and the first course of blocks was laid I could then excavate out the remainder of the dirt inside the pond to the desired depth. I wanted at least 3 feet deep around the sides and at least 5 feet deep in the sump area after the liner was fitted I did achieve this with a lot  of digging. I resorted to my Kango jack hammer to dig out the clay as it was so hard and the spade would just bounce off.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
