You might be asking yourself the same question I asked myself a few years ago when I visited a local garden and aquatic centre.
I wandered around all the large tubs of gurgling water looking at all these lovely Koi and also the prices. I said to my wife it seems a bit too expensive and a lot of work to dig out a pond and buy filters for it.
Well a friend of mine has a converted swimming pool of no less than 12,000 gallons and some very large koi in it also indoors as well.
I sat down with him for a coffee one evening like we have done for many years and I mentioned that I had been to a garden and aquatic centre but the prices seemed prohibitive.
He said well the price of the pond construction can be drastically reduced if you build it yourself and if you make your own filters the cost will come down even further.
The paper and crayons came out and in the early hours of the morning and 10 coffees later we had worked out the pond size and filters and where to place it in the garden.
At first i thought I would put a water feature in with a few goldfish in it, well from advice from my friend saying it will not last long before you will want some Koi in there so build it with Koi in mind so I did.
I decided to put my project on to K/C with help from Eric as I felt I took a lot of advice from the website and I would like to put something back in a good idea I reckon.
The rest is all for you to see I hope you find them enjoyable.

The updated filter system after it was found that the original was not able to cope with the pond. This is a 4 bay homemade filter using a 50 gallon domestic header tank, and it is described later in this article. |
