The pond was built with 4 inch concrete block, rendered, and coated with KoiKote.
The two photos below show close-ups of the window and the mosaic.
Andy made the mosaics himself by photocopying and enlarging the general outline of a koi, with smashed up red, white and black tiles he laid them face up on the paper and then stuck clear sticky-backed-plastic over them. He was then left with a sheet of sticky-backed-plastic that could picked up and pressed into the tiling adhesive. Once dry the sticky-backed-plastic was pulled off and the tile koi was left, then the blue smashed up tiles were added around it and grouted in.
Constructing the window was also done by Andy. He rendered the pond as normal and then when dry cut out the shape of the glass in the render, this was then stuck to the exposed blockwork using aquarium silicon sealant and held in place with temporary supports across the inside face. Andy then run another bead of sealant around the inside of the window and also on the outside against the brickwork. Once the sealant was dry and the water was behind it it wasn't going to fall out.
Here we have a couple of photos of the fish in their happy environment. The water is very clear right down to the bottom.
The photo on the left shows the empty vegetable filter, and on the right as it is today. This is fed from the filter and/or skimmer system, and returns to the pond via the waterfall or the high water return.
This website started with a
booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS
- South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This
is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems
that might occur by following these ideas. It is important
that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules
that may apply.
