Pond descriptions

Mick & Mandy's pond

Mick and Mandy are from Yorkshire, and members of the Yorkshire Koi Society. They already had a 3500 gallon liner pond at the bottom of our relatively small garden, but were having trouble with bacteria and unmanageable blanketweed, so they said that when they got back from their holidays they were either going to pack up or build a proper koi pond and utilise their neighbours 6 foot high wall as shade to help keep the blanketweed at bay. So on return from holiday they got themselves a copy of the dvd Project koi pond - the construction of a 21st century koi pond system, and set about digging. They wanted it above ground for safety as they have a lot of nieces and nephews as well as their son who was nine at the time
The completed pond

The pond is 14ft x 8ft x 5.46ft at the bottom drain. The pond has a 6 inch concrete base then in ground they used 18"x 9"x 4" concrete blocks then backfilled up to ground level then carried on with the blocks and put brick ties on each course at 2ft spaces. At ground level they layed a concrete collar all round and after choosing the facing bricks to tie in with house built the exterior walls, we rendered the internal with building sand, and then Aquarius Koi fibreglassed the pond. It was decided on slate copings to keep the height down.

View of filter system

The filter system consists of 3 vortex chambers. The first has static K1, the second 100 litres k1, and the third has Japanese matting. Mick is in the process of adding some other filtration on to the end of the skimmer return.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
