Wayne & Heidi's pond - page 5

My Bio-Filter is a 200 litre blue drum that I roughly based on the well known Skippy filter.
The first outgoing line from my pump runs into my home made filter and then into the pond via the water fall that I still plan to build.

The bio filter has an incoming line with a “T” and two 90 degreee bends that point in opposite directions to cause the water to create a vortex. Below the incoming line is a grid. On the bottom of the drum is a 40ml tap that allows me to flush all the dirt out at the bottom of the filter if I need to.
I decided to use hair curlers as my bio-media instead of bio-balls. Apparently it works just as well if not better, and hair curlers are a lot cheaper than bio-balls in South Africa.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
