Pond descriptions

Wayne & Heidi's pond - page 3

While the water was still being drained David placed the bottom drain and black plastic liner with wire mesh in position.

Wet concrete is being poured in

The black plastic helped to keep the ground water away from the wet concrete that was going to be poured on top of the black plastic. But unfortunately it did not help to keep rain water out.

The wire mesh gave the concrete more grip. I was worried that the sides of the pond would collapse under the weight of the concrete so I bought reinforced steel mesh and placed it on the sides of the pond.

In the image above you can see the little submersible pump in action trying to drain the last water out of the pond before the concrete is poured in.

The image on the right shows David busy laying the concrete foundation of the pond. The floor and side of the pond is 10 - 15 cm thick.
Because we had such a big water problem i bought water sealer and david mixed it into all the concrete and plaster. This helped to make the concrete water resistant.

We used 16 bags of cement, 2 ton building sand, 1 ton building stone, 20 litres of cement sealer, 15 meters wire mesh and 10 meters reinforced steel.

Here you can see me supervising the construction. Gee, it is hard work building a koi pond...

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
