Wayne & Heidi's pond - page 2

Here is the story of my Koi Pond.

Pond Construction
.

On 13th October 2005 I employed David Van der Merwe and one of his laborers to build the pond for me according to my specifications. He is the guy in the blue-ish shirt.

40 centimeters down and they discovered the remains of a very large old plastic swimming pool (the type with wire for support).
At about 70 centimeters down they hit ground water! I was very worried about this as I wanted the pond to be at least 1.5 meters deep.

Luckily I had done my homework and knew exactly how to get rid of the high water table problem.

Starting to dig out the pond
Submersible pump to remove ground water

We dug the ditch where the bottom drain pipes were going to be, and we dug it deeper than the pond. This caused all the ground water to run into that location. This was really messy as the sides of the ditch were collapsing the whole time.

Then we used a small submersible pump in a plant basket to pump all the water out. This little submersible pumps 800 litres of water a hour and it ran 24/7 for 2 weeks. The plant basket acts as filter to keep all the debris out otherwise the pump gets clogged up.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
