Pond descriptions

Keith & Rose's pond

Keith & Rose decided to build a new pond on a larger scale than the one they had, and work began in the Spring of 1992. The was up and running within 7 to 8 weeks, but as always it takes a lot longer to complete the walls, rockeries, etc around the pond.

The construction of Keith's pond is unusual because he decided to build a round pond using a polypropylene tank which was built by Bob Pateman Enterprises of Essex. The pond is 12 feet diameter with a tapered conical base which gives a depth of 4ft 6ins with 5ft in the centre where a 17 ins diameter bottom drain is located, and this is connected to a 4 ins pipe.
The pond was made up from flat polypropylene sheets and the whole structure was made up and welded together in the top of the garden and the drain and various inlets and outlets were added at this time.
A group of friends and a mini JCB then dug out the hole one week-end and then the whole pond was lowered into the whole and it was then backfilled. During the welding and installation procedure the tank has not remained completely round, but this does seem to improve the overall layout. The pond alone holds 2850 gallons, and the whole system complete with filter and the vortex chamber holds 3,500 gallons.
Water flows from the pond via the bottom drain or the mid-water connection to the vortex chamber. This is 30 ins diameter and 48 ins deep, and is also made of polypropylene. It was originally intended to use the bottom drain connection during the Summer and the mid-water connection during the Winter, but after experimenting Keith has now decided to use the bottom drain only.
From the vortex the water flows into a three bay pvc filter. The complete unit is 8 ft long x 20 ins wide x 20 ins deep. Each of the three bays have a drain which is connected to a single pipe which discharges into the drain box.

In July 2003 the filter has been changed to a Nexus unit.

UPDATE 2004. This pond has gone through many changes in the 12 years since it was built, and in 2003 the filter system was changed to a Nexus unit. The details shown above were taken when the pond was built, and it is intended to have a new page here shortly.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
