This pond
was completed in 1993, and took 3 months to complete.
Bryn has always been interested in cold water fish, and he and Lorna have always
had a goldfish pond in their garden. In recent years they have also been interested
in keeping koi, and decided they would build a large pond for their fish. Fortunately
they joined the B.K.K.S - South Wales Section first so they were able to get
advice from the members and so build a suitable pond the first time.
The pond is square
in shape with about 18" above ground level so as to ensure
the safety of the grand children which is a very important
issue when originally designing a pond. It all fits in well
with the general layout of the garden. The base of the pond
is of six inch thick ready mixed concrete. Bryn had asked the
concrete company for advice regarding the type of concrete
to use, and they had recommended a 40 neutron mix which is
normally supplied for the building of bridges, and even the
driver was surprised when he delivered it.
The walls
were then built up to ground level using 18" x 9" x 4" concrete
high density blocks laid on their side. Above ground the same
blocks are laid on edge, and are faced with buff coloured Yorkstone
walling blocks, and the same material is used for the coping.
The pond is 5ft 6ins deep at the centre, and is benched towards the sides. The
internal walls were rendered, and then one final coat was used which included
Fibromix. When completely dry it was coated with G4.
The filters are also
constructed of the same material as the pond with 4" walls dividing the bays, and
were treated in the same way. There are 1.5" drains in each bay
and the vortex, and these are connected to individual valves
in the drains box.
The two Grundfoss pumps, the 30 watt UV lamp, and the Hiblow 40 are situated
in the top of the drains chamber, and a plastic cover protects them from the
weather.
Bryn intends to fit hinged covers over all the filter system in the future.

UPDATE 2004. This
pond is still fully operational after 10 years.
This website started with a
booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS
- South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This
is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems
that might occur by following these ideas. It is important
that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules
that may apply.
