Eugen has had a pond in his garden
for some time, but it did not have bottom drains and so he decided
to replace it completely and now has built this present pond.
As soon as one looks out of the lounge patio doors it is clear
to see that the pond has been designed to fit in well with the
remainder of the garden. The pond is a large rectangular shape
which is six feet deep and mainly below ground, but there is
a raised water course all around the pond which has been constructed
with bricks whose colours harmonise well with the surroundings.
The construction of the base was
200mm of concrete with reinforced mesh. The walls were built
up using double rows of 18" x 9" x 4" concrete blocks standing
on edge with the gap between them filled with mortar. The whole
construction was designed by an architect, and the walls for
the bottom three rows are even thicker than this because the
pond is built within the "L" shaped bungalow. The walls were
then rendered and the pond was fibreglassedand is black in colour.
The work was carried out by Mick Whitehall and was completed
in one day with Mick working on his own.
The filter system lies along one side of the pond and the vortex,
filter unit pump space, and drains box are fibreglass units, and
these are all incorporated in one large bay made up of concrete
blocks with connections to the main drains. This bay is covered
over with wooden planking which has been made up in sections which
are fitted with hinges and so each part can be opened up as required
to get to the unit below.
An interesting feature is the water course which is incorporated around the four
sides of the pond. The water is pumped through one of the ultra-violet and water
cress and water plants are planted up in plastic baskets. This pond is also fitted
with a swimming pool underwater light so that at night the pond is lit up, and
this has a different effect to the usual way of only using an overhead floodlight
to light up the patio area.

UPDATE 2004. This
pond is still fully operational after 10 years, and it is hoped
to add an update page in the near future,
This website started with a
booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS
- South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This
is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems
that might occur by following these ideas. It is important
that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules
that may apply.
