Louis & Helen's pond

The garden before building starts

This photo was taken before the work was started and shows the patio area at that time.
The JCB starting work
The JCB begins the work on excavating the area for the pond. Part of the fencing behind the machine has been removed to allow entry on to the site.
The hole has been dug out by the JCB
The machine has completed the work and can just be seen on the other side of the fence.
The excavated area will now be dug out by hand to the correct size.
Concrete blocks ready for use
The 18" x 9" x 4" high density concrete blocks are delivered to the site ready for the work. For this pond and filter system over 900 blocks were used.
Bottom drains in position
The pipework and the bottom drains are now in position, and are held in place by concrete mounds underneath.
Before pouring the concrete it is necessary to test the pipe for leaks, and if the water is left in place when pouring the concrete then this will help to prevent the pipes from moving.
Concrete base in position
The concrete base has now been poured, and has been allowed a few days for the concrete to start to dry.
The workman is now building up the bricks which will support the benched base.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
