A Guide to Modern Koi Pond Construction Concrete block filter units
The fibreglass filter units
are easy to purchase, and quick to install. The cost seems to vary with
some finding it is cheaper to build their own, and others say it is cheaper
to buy the fibreglass units. It is suggested that you get quotations from
as many dealers as you can, and then make a decision. |

This filter was fitted into the confines of a swimming pool which had been converted. For this reason the four bays were made into a pattern representing a square. |
This
filter is situated along the width of the pond, and the required size
of the four bays of the filter meant that with the Vortex chamber it
was going to be longer than the side of the pond. To accommodate the filter then one bay, which in this case is the first bay, is situated alongside the others. It could have been the pump chamber or the vortex chamber in that position. |
This filter is situated away from the pond and there was plenty of room to accommodate this large filter. The vortex chambers, three filter bays, and the pump chamber are all situated in a straight line. TIP. As there are two vortex chambers each fed from a bottom drain it would probably have been better to have divided the filters down the centre so as to have seperate filter systems. |
This view shows a more conventional layout with a vortex chamber, 4 filter bays, and the pump chamber in the lower corner. |

This filter had to be fitted into a triangular part of the garden, and so it was decided to arrange it as shown in this photo. It will operate just as well as if it was all situated in a straight line, although a bit more care is needed when designing it. |

The building of this last filter is described on the next page on Building a concrete filter unit.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply. |
