Decking over the filter system

It is generally accepted that the surface area of a filter should be at least 30% of the surface area of the pond, so with the addition of a pump chamber and probably a vortex chamber then this all takes up a great deal of space. Another problem is that it needs to be fairly close to the pond so again it needs to look fairly presentable, and fit in with the general layout of the garden.
One positive point is that it can be covered over, and the only requirement is that you are able to get access to remove and/or clean it out.
One way that our members Mark & Ritta have overcome this problem is put the filter system along one side of the pond and then cover it over with wooden decking, and this admired by everyone that visits their garden. Their system is shown below.

The two photographs above show the first sections of wood being placed in position
[Internal view] The work is now progressing and the cross pieces now have the battens fitted so that they support the removable setions.
It will be noted that "bubble wrap" has been put laid on the surface of the water in each filter. This holds in the heat, and also prevents dust and dirt from entering the system.
[Section drawing]
The drawing above is a cross-section of the decking.
All the wood was cut to size, planed, and treated against rot etc. before being painted.
[View of decking] This photo shows some of the removable decking in position, and other sections are standing up against the wall ready for putting in place.
Each section can easily be moved by one person, and they vary in size so that easy access is possible to area below for routine daily maintenance etc.
It will be noted that small profile corrugated plastic sheeting is laid over the filters, and are slightly raised up on one side. This ensures that rain and any debris that may fall through the decking is washed away and does not enter the filters.
[All decking completed] This is a view of the filter area when all the decking is in position. The jpeg photo is unfortunately not very good as it does not show the straight lines.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
