A Guide to Modern Koi Pond Construction

Bottom drains with diffuser

It is necessary to have a large amount of aeration in a Koi pond, and this is usually supplied by a venturi, and sometimes a waterfall. If the pond is well stocked as usually happens when the fish get bigger then many koi-keepers find it necessary to add extra aeration with air stones.
This does not look very good in a pond and to overcome this many dealers have come up with air diffusers which are fitted instead of the usual dome on the top of the bottom drain.

This photo shows a typical PVC bottom drain but in this case it is fitted with a diffuser instead of the normal dome.
These diffusers were first introduced into the UK by Prokoi Enterprises, but several different types are now available.
They present a circular column of fine bubbles from the dome to the surface of the pond, and it is claimed that the movement of the water helps to move the debris towards the bottom drain and so improving it's efficiency.

It was normal practice to put the airline inside the 4" pipe for the bottom drain, but as this can cause silting up of the pipework it is now normal practice to run the airline in a separate pipe.

This is a close up of the above bottom drain and it can be seen here that an additional pipe connection is fitted so that an extra pipe can be installed to carry the airline for the diffuser.

The two photos above show the diffuser part of the bottom drain. The stem is sealed at the bottom so all the air has to pass up through the diffuser. The close up photo on the right shows the connection for the airline.
The bottom drain and diffuser shown above is supplied by Alternative Aquatics.

The two photos above show a similar arrangement, but in this case the additional pipework connection is for 2" diameter pressure piping for the 1/2 inch reinforced air hose.
This bottom drain and diffuser is supplied by Infiltration Limited,
but many others are available.

When these air diffusers were first used then they were used with ordinary fish tank tubing. However, with the large amount of air that these diffusers can dispense the normal practice now is to use reinforced plastic tubing as shown in this photograph. The internal diameter is 10mm and it is attached with a jubilee clip.

NOTE. Many garden hoses contain chemicals which makes them unsuitable for this use.

This website started with a booklet which I made up originally for the help of those members of the BKKS - South Wales Section who were intending to start building a koi pond, and as the website has expanded more information and articles from other people have been included. This is for general guidance only, and we do not take any responsibility for problems that might occur by following these ideas. It is important that you check out everything in your area, and check on local laws and rules that may apply.
